Take a Peek at New Boutique Hotel, The Shanghai EDITION

Highly anticipated and hyped new boutique hotel The Shanghai EDITION, is now open on Nanjing Dong Lu, near Henan Lu, a stone’s throw from The Bund. Obviously I had to go take a look, and was lucky enough to receive a complete tour by Eddy Ding, the affable Signature Restaurant and Bar Lounge General Manager.

The Shanghai EDITION is taking up the space of not one, but two of those stunning Art Deco heritage buildings that populate The Bund area. The tallest tower is occupied with their 145 bedrooms and a gorgeous rooftop bar. The other one is home to an ambitious food and beverage program with three restaurant concepts developed by Jason Atherton and headed by Scott Melvin, a club room, an actual club, several lounge bars and another rooftop bar.

So let’s take a peek at the beautiful interiors and design!

The Lobby

Faux-natural plants and unspoiled, minimalistic grey and wooden surfaces dominate the space. Here their lobby lounge bar serves a collection of all the different signature cocktails that are available at the other hotel’s bars.

The Shanghai Tavern

Located at the ground floor of EDITION, the restaurant is bright, airy and minimal, featuring a spacious dining room, an open kitchen with counter seating and a bar lounge area. The cake trolley is my favorite thing ever. The booze trolley… my second favorite thing ever.

Canton Disco

It’s exactly what the name says it is. A cantonese restaurant with a pimped up disco playlist. It looks like Hakkasan and Canton Table fell in love, had a kid and she got all the best genes from both. They say it’s the most popular restaurant in the establishment so far.

The Club Room

Open to the hoi polloi of the wider public, aka everyone, the EDITION Club Room is a cozy space to wind down, drink a glass of whiskey and play pool. They also have a movie screening room and a KTV room which you can rent for private functions.

Electric Circus

Yep, they even have a club in there. Not sure about this one, but well, why not? Some people love clubbing. They have set up a separate entry for Electric Circus, probably so their regular hotel guests don’t have to encounter potentially intoxicated party-goers.

HIYA

HIYA is under Christopher Pitts’ wing who spent a long time at The London EDITION for trainings and he’s now taking the lead at this upscale Japanese restaurant. The restaurant space is the most stunning within the complex. Not sure what the price tag will be (it looks damn expensive), but if the food is only half as good as the environment it’ll be a hit.

Punch Room

Upstairs from HIYA there’s a small, secluded lounge bar with stunning views on the Shanghai skyline. Perfect spot to have some quality time with a couple of wealthy friends or to impress a date after a sexy Japanese dinner downstairs.

The Rooftop Terraces

While they’re not completed yet and therefore we weren’t allowed to take pictures, here’s the view you can enjoy from their tallest terrace. It’s crazy I know.

The Deluxe Room (City View)

Minimal and curated, EDITION’s city view rooms look like the perfect place to relax during a business trip. The standard room we visited is small compared to other 5 star hotels, and for RMB 2300 a night it feels a bit tight. But then again you’re at The Shanghai EDITION, and you’re paying for the brand and the glory as well.
