New Menu at The Nest: Brunch Lovers Rejoice!

Shanghai brunch culture is getting stronger and stronger. Every week, on Friday afternoon, many WeChat groups start debating on what’s the latest best brunch in town. Several venues are currently competing to get a portion of this lucrative market share with more or less attractive brunch menus and set deals.

For the saddest occasion, my good friend’s leaving party, we went for brunch to The Nest, which I reviewed for the first time in March 2016,  to try some their new menu items. I can confidently say this venue will be on top of my list of recommendations for a long while.

The brunch deal itself is unbelievable for location, environment and quality of food. RMB 198 will get you a powerful welcome cocktail and three courses of your choice from their fairly expensive list of brunch dishes.

You can start your brunch the classy way with 1/2 dozen Fine de Claire oysters. Fresh like the ocean, these babies will open up your appetite for more seafood dishes.

The Seafood Spaghetti wasn’t one of my favorite items in the menu, maybe because being Italian we expect a bit more salt in our pasta dishes. Disclaimer: Italians really do put a ton of salt in their pasta.

The Clam Chowder with salmon and salmon roe was delicious. It has indeed been acclaimed by the good folks of the Shanghai Bite Club, and though I share their enthusiasm I feel like the salmon roe could be improved in quality (the eggs were a bit small and hard to “pop”).

They don’t forget egg dishes at the Nest. Their Bacon Egg Benedict (poached at 65 degrees) is a work of art with the crispiest bacon and it’s accompanied by a lovely Hollandaise sauce that is almost as fluffy as mousse.

For bigger appetites, you can choose the Lithuanian Potato Pancake with bacon bits and the mind blowing Grilled Cheese sandwich. I love Co. Cheese but this bitch at The Nest is a whole another league.

To end your brunch on a sweet note, you can choose among a few different desserts. I personally preferred the salted caramel ice-cream & waffle over the French brioche toast, but both were delicious, it’s just a matter of preferences.

If the welcome drink is not enough for your weekend day-drinking habit, the brunch cocktail list is quite interesting and includes several drinks at RMB 50 each. I had the French Bloody Mary, good stuff, but you’ll be happy with pretty much any of their well-crafted drinks.
