[This venue has unfortunately been closed since the time of my visit]
El Cóctel is a cocktail bar (quite obviously from the name) backed by the lovely guys of el Willy (also, quite clearly from the name). Opened in 2010, this bar is the product of a communal effort of three passionate and expert mixologists Munenori Harada, Martin Campaign and Tree Mao.
It’s situated on the crazy strip of land that is Yongfu Lu and you won’t reach it before having been asked if you need any sort of drugs by at least a couple of dealers in this street. Which may not be ideal if you’re up for fancying it up with a client or date, but it definitely adds to the Golden Age theme.
Like Speak Low, el Cóctel has a strong Japanese imprint, but the atmosphere is not as stiff as you would expect from this type of lounge. I even cracked a dance move or two, I confess.
About confessions… I’ve visited this bar only once and I regret to admit that I got stuck with the Pornstar Martini and ordered three of those in 1 hour. So good! The cocktail is clearly on the sweet side but balanced out by the sourness of the passion fruit. Damage: RMB 98.
They come with half a fresh passion fruit on the side.
It was silly, it was dangerous, it was orgasmic.
The food comes from el Willy, I’ve tried the grilled cheese sandwich and it was delicious. Most items on the food menu seem worth a shot.
I’ll be back soon so I can complete this review with more recommendations.
